I'm playing Donkey Kong for N64 and I'm stuck!?

I'm in level 2 (Angry Aztec) and there's a big door that can only be accessed by Donkey Kong because the path that leads to the door is blocked by lava. To the left of it is a barrel that DK jumps into to become invincible The big door, however, is closed. How do I open it?
