Why does the Electoral College Vote count and not the Popular Vote count?

I believe it would be a simple and better way to Elect the President by the Popular Vote. Look at Al Gore and he won the majority of the Popular Vote by 543,816 more popular votes than Bush in the 2000 Election. I am registered as an independent, so I am not biased with this question. What do you guys think?
