What theme should I portray in a short story?

I have to write a short story using a specific theme. The given definition of theme in the case of our unit is "a comment about the human condition that a writer makes through his or her work," and a theme or themes are often what make a work of literature relevant to all of our lives. Our short stories must follow the same "theme" of "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe. I need to know what said theme should be. if you have any suggestions as to what I should write the story about please share as well...
